The Woman's Club was founded in 1891 and is dedicated to enriching the community through the promotion of public welfare, education, civic improvement, historic preservation and the advancement of the arts and culture while fostering good fellowship among its members.
In its 126-year history, the Club has participated in many civic projects that improved the community. Members worked to build the first school and library and to improve opportunities for youth. The impact of our Club was keenly felt, especially for its conservation efforts to preserve and protect the Everglades. Its focus remains on areas of women’s issues, child welfare, community service and conservation. Our contributions. to these activities are made possible by the contributions of our members and fundraising; by use of our very desirable building and grounds by outside groups, and by outright gifts of time and money by the Club membership, donations from individuals, area businesses and other not-for-profit organizations.
The Clubhouse, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, provides meeting and workspace for the Women's Club and serves as a host for community events. The present clubhouse was built in 1921 in the heart of Coconut Grove and was designed by Walter DeGarmo, Florida's first registered architect. The Club has served as a social, educational and cultural center throughout its history. The Woman's Club of Coconut Grove is a place where women come together, build relationships, and create community through their civic service activities.
